MONIQUE

Despite how much I wanted to keep training, knowing I needed to get strong quickly, Sam forced me to go to bed at one o’clock by refusing to train me anymore that night. His reasoning was the constantly recited “You should be getting eight hours of sleep every night.” My personal trainer had been telling me that too. Only Sam twisted the saying to make it uniquely his own: “If you don’t want to end up looking like barfed-up squash when you face Grayson, you need to get enough sleep. Not only will it keep you alert, it’ll allow your body to relax. And stop eating crap,” he added when he saw me grabbing a Twix bar before bed.

I seriously felt like I was on an episode of Weight Watchers.

Sam slept over that night, not trusting that Grayson wouldn’t barge in here and try to kidnap me as well. Jana had fired my bodyguard, and no one else was in the house, so the only protection I had was him, the security system, and my minimal fighting skills.

“Wow, I didn’t think you’d actually care,” I teased him when he told me why he was staying the night.

“I don’t,” he retorted, not to my surprise. “You’re just another problem needing to be taken care of.”

I expected him to be rude. But not that rude. I didn’t understand why he hated me so much, and it bothered me that I didn’t know. But I knew that no matter how much I pried, he wouldn’t give me a single word of the truth.

I didn’t sleep well that night, knowing Sam was in the house. Despite the fact that I had locked my room door and he was downstairs on the futon in the living room, I didn’t trust that he wouldn’t come in and take advantage of our being alone together while I was asleep so I wouldn’t fight back. He could easily put me in bonds in case I woke up as well.

But he didn’t. All night, I would doze off and wake up at any little sound, but the sounds were never him coming into my room. They were never him at all—just sounds of the house settling and stuff outside, nothing alarming. Yet I still couldn’t sleep properly. By the time eight o’clock hit and he came to knock on my door, I was still exhausted.

“Get up,” he ordered from outside like we were in some sort of military boot camp. The sun wasn’t even up yet, and his wake-up call just ruined my mood.

But I got up. I headed into the washroom and brushed my teeth. I then went down some Cheerios, but before I could even pour them into a bowl, Sam showed up out of nowhere and grabbed the box from me. I noticed that the thick band was still on his wrist. I wanted to ask why he wore it all the time but I highly doubted he would give me an answer, so I didn’t bother.
